The Spontaneous Parc Jeanne Mance Snow Sculpture Gallery
Last Friday night Montreal got a huge dump of snow. My main reaction was frustration: I had stalled on driving my roommate to pick up a coat the night before, and now I needed to dig out my car. I'm new to owning a car in Montreal, and I'd seen people do it before, I knew it would be annoying, and it was. My car was covered and surrounded by sticky packing snow, and the shovel we borrowed from my apartment's entrance broke right as we started trying to clear a path.
In retrospect, I feel like a jerk, I got back from driving my friend, had some strangers help me back my way into the spot, and retreated inside to do barely any work and obsess over a board game online. Meanwhile, everyone else in the city of Montreal did what you are supposed to do with packing snow: roll it into balls and make snow creatures, forts, and more. I didn't do an exact count, but there are easily more than 100 spontaneous artistic creations covering the park.

| It's hard to capture the sheer scope of this, but here's an attempt. |
I'm tempted to editorialize but instead I'll let the works speak for themselves. (Well, with some captions.) If you are in the city, make sure you take a stroll through this garden before it melts away. (Blogspot is a bit annoying as a photo sharing tool so I've also arranged them in this Flickr Gallery.)
