October Odds and Ends
A few of my reviews were published in Exclaim! magazine, including my contributions to their best of the decade lists.
Little Scream - Speed Queen
I am number 43 on the list of albums of the decade.
I will update this post when they put out the songs list.
Currently on my mind:
How much of our identity is based on the ways others treat us? Taking a class on contemporary narratives, and a repeating feature is the determination of people's conditions based on whether they are validated, supported and cared for by their communities. The mode of being mentioned in one of the readings is "Narrative Continuity" and my opinion is that this relies on a society that protects, supports, and contributes to your narrative. Yet at the same time, we are often alone, and the idea of a self-narrative can easily slide over to solipsism, which would seem to go against the idea of us being constituted by others.
With the death of Deadspin, what is the fate of that model of journalism? Are we powerless against the forces of capitalism? Can a new version of the same thing rise from the ashes, or is the old blogosphere dead due to the power of aggregators like facebook and Reddit?
I am writing a short work about the pathetic qualities of men, how they change themselves to suit their amorous objects, and the tricky notion of "the friend zone." If you have any stories of humiliation, send them my way or pound off in the comments.
That's all for this week!
