Coming out of the Hamilton Closet and Ranking the Songs
I have decided that my position on this musical is a Mulvey-esque one. It gives me pleasure but that is bad.
1.
Satisfied – I listen to this a lot. The rewind
is good, the chorus is good, the raps are good, the melody is cool
2.
Non Stop – This one’s a jam, well balanced and I’m
a big fan of a good medley
3.
Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story – See above,
but I don’t like “the orphanage” repetition, but the angelica bit is
:fireemoji:
4.
It’s Quiet Uptown – I really like it and its
piano melody even if I get to a point where I’m annoyed by the “unimaginable”
repetition
5.
The Adams Administration – Best transition
6.
Stay Alive Reprise : a v good reprise
7.
Guns & Ships – I’m a sucker for doubletime
8.
The Schuyler Sisters – earworm
9.
Election of 1800 – best use of the “every action
has an equal opposite reaction” and just idk pretty good
10.
Room Where it Happens – Catchy dark and fun, trumpets
are good, “Thomas claims” bit is good but I don’t like “click boom”
11.
What’d I Miss - Aww yah I like the blues-y
southern flava and legitimately kind of funny
12.
Wait for It – Didn’t like at first but really
grew on me, builds real well
13.
Right Hand Man – Washington’s best song
14.
History Has Its Eyes On You – His Second Best
15.
Take A Break - #commasexting is actually good
and probably Eliza’s best
16.
Hurricane – I am a man who likes to write his
way out
17.
Yorktown – Could be put a few spots up or down
18.
My Shot – Same as above, I don’t think it’s as
good as manuel Miranda toots his own horn about it
19.
Washington On Your Side – bit slow for my taste
but damn I love that action/reaction line, and it gets good at the end
20.
Aaron Burr, Sir – sets up a lot, not the best on
its own
21.
Blow us All Away – Phillip is cool but I don’t
~love it~
22.
A winter’s ball – I like it.
23.
Story of Tonight – how many drinks have they had
at this point
24.
Your Obedient Servant – Burr bein’ pissed is
good but I find myself wanting to get to the good stuff
25.
Schuyler Defeated – Good transition but nothin’
special
26.
Alexander Hamilton – Starts things well, but I
like where the themes get taken later more than the origin
27.
That Would Be Enough – same as above, I like the
theme it generates more
28.
The Reynolds Pamphlet – I like the bass and
glitchiness but not so much the hook
29.
Stay Alive – Just solid and sets a pretty good
theme
30.
Dear Theodosia – kinda kute
31.
Helpless – The inferior Schuyler sister sings a
song that is worse than Satisfied (even though it is good). I hate the “I am so
into you” descant bit. The theme is better used elsewhere
32.
Story of Tonight Reprise – Idk I don’t got beef
with it
33.
Cabinet Battle 1 – the first of two extremely
overrated songs, everyone talks about the planting line but I see it as meh/”oh
we should mention slavery” and the whisky line is bad sorrynotsorry
34.
You’ll be Back, What Comes Next, I Know Him –
Kind of fun – I see them as one song
35.
No to This – has a decent groove but just annoys
me because dude just say no, it feels overly apologist but maybe that’s just me
being a fuccboi, dark minor key stuff is good
36.
We Know – pretty much only there for narrative
purposes, not that good musically
37.
Burn – Idk man it drags
38.
10 Duel Commandments – One of the best areas to
make a case for how lame Hamilton is. No meaningful connection to the original,
which is really good.
39.
Cabinet Battle 2 – Worse than the first one, imo
Hamilton loses and is a big lame stick in the mud. Ideologically annoying, “don’t
know now you know” seems shoehorned
40.
Best of Wives Best of Women – Miranda just
really wanted this line in there
41.
One Last Time – Burr’s better at the rnb stuff,
although I like the first bit
42.
Farmer Refuted – I skip this one
43.
Meet Me Inside – So many cringey lines “yo we
won” and just like idk it’s got a goofiness to it that cuts it trying to be
super serious
